A parenting plan is essential to work effectively for your children with their father, but it can be confusing what to add to the plan and are you covering everything?

Having a parenting plan setup in as much details as possible from the beginning will help you with a hopefully smooth co-parenting relationship.

Below are 20 questions you need to ask yourself when preparing your plan:
  1. How much time should each child spend with you and their father?
  2. How will the holidays be organised?
  3. How will you organise Christmas, Parent’s birthdays, Children’s birthdays and other important days in your family?
  4. Do you need to discuss how the children will maintain contact with each parent when living with the other?
  5. How will your children move between houses and their activities?
  6. What are your children’s present and future educational needs?
  7. How will the day-to-day and periodic costs be shared??
  8. How will miscellaneous educational costs be met? (i.e uniforms, camp expenses)
  9. Will the child support agency assessment be taken into account?
  10. How will you and their father share health care costs?
  11. How and by whom will the children be fed during the week?
  12. What parenting decisions do you feel require joint consultation?
  13. Do you and their father need to set up regular meetings to discuss parenting matters?
  14. Do you and their father need to discuss how you will both communicate about parenting matters?
  15. Should you and their father include your children in these discussions?
  16. Do you and their father need to discuss how you both talk to the children about the other parent?
  17. Do you and their father need to review the parenting plan and if so how will you go about it?
  18. How will you communicate with their father?(email, text, phone)
  19. What timeframe is agreed for a response from each other?
  20. Do you and their father need to review the parenting plan and if so how will you go about it?

Don’t rush to do your parenting plan, ensure you are happy with the plan.  Communication is key right now, voice your concerns and make co-parenting seamless.

A good checklist. I would also add to it whether they have considered Consent Orders and if they have had legal advice before signing on the dotted line.
